Helpful Utilities

BashFlash 1.1
BashFlash (free) adds a systemwide menu-bar icon that indicates the amount of CPU cycles that Flash is consuming: none, low, or high (over 30 percent). If Safari is slowed down and BashFlash is glowing red, just click the BashFlash menu and choose Kill Flash Plugin to kill Flash on all Web pages in Safari. To reload the Flash content on a page, just reload that Web page. BashFlash requires Mac OS X 10.6 or higher.

iMedia Browser 1.2.2
Karelia Software's iMedia Browser (free) is a browser and viewer for all the photos, movies, music, and bookmarks on your Mac. It will show you the content from iPhoto and Aperture image libraries, the iTunes library, GarageBand songs, iTunes and iPhoto movie and video libraries, and more. You can also drag a folder onto iMedia Browser to view any media within it.

When you find an item you like, you can drag it directly onto a document page in any drag-and-drop-aware application — including QuarkXPress 8 and Adobe InDesign. Or, you can drag a copy of the item onto your Desktop. You can also drag an item from iMedia Browser onto any application in the Dock that can handle that item, and that application will open it, place it, attach it to an email message, or anything else it can do with a media file.

For convenience, you can tell iMedia Browser to appear as an item in your Mac's menu bar, or in the Dock. It's a great tool for managing your media without having to launch iPhoto, iTunes, Aperture, etc.

ShrinkIt 1.1
ShrinkIt (free) is a utility that shrinks PDFs from applications such as Adobe Illustrator and InDesign by stripping unnecessary data such as preview images and other nonvital, program-specific junk. When you drop one or more PDFs onto ShrinkIt, or even a folder containing PDFs mixed in with other files, the program removes unnecessary data from the PDFs without a loss of quality. It then re-saves the PDF with the same name, and archives the original PDF by adding _org_ to the beginning of its file name.

Equalizer
Equalizer is a free script for InDesign that lets you copy and apply attributes from one object to another. It extends the capability of InDesign's Eyedropper tool by copying object-defining information such as X- and Y-coordinates, size, shear, and rotation angles across multiple objects. Equalizer eliminates the need to manually copy and paste this info or to write it down to re-input for another object. Simply right-click on the defining object to access the contextual menu, choose which attributes to copy, select objects you want to affect, and choose the option to apply. Equalizer is one of those scripts that does something very simple, yet saves production artists loads of time. For full info, see www.tinyurl.com/yb4m4uu
