Helpful Utilities
TNEF’s Enough
This donationware utility from Josh Jacob converts those mysterious “winmail.dat” email attachments to a Rich Text file that your Mac can read. It also converts attachments of the type “application/ms-tnef”.
According to author, here’s why this occurs in the first place: Microsoft TNEF stream files are usually received by SMTP based e-mail programs from Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook users, either as a MIME attachment named “winmail.dat” or a MIME attachment with the type “application/ms-tnef. ”The file is a rich text (or MAPI) message that is sent from Outlook to Exchange. When Exchange sends the message to an outside server it writes the MAPI message as a MIME attachment.
The unfortunate side effect of this plan is if the Outlook user has someone in their address book as a person who can receive “Rich Text” then the user will receive the TNEF file whether the user uses Outlook or not. Download the version for Intel or PowerPC processors.

83 Free Photoshop Brushes
As CreativePro.com’s Terri Stone says: “With these free Techy brushes, you can quickly add glowing grids, complicated schematics, and abstract imagery to your projects. Before installing the brushes, read the site’s terms of use.” The set includes 2Bit Twilight, a set of 12 brushes by Axeraider70; 50 Deadly Tron Grids, a set of 50 brushes by Arcnerva: and Schematics, a set of 21 brushes by Dex Multimedia.
PageFrame 3.0 for QuarkXPress and InDesign
Badia PageFrame 3.0 is a free XTension for QuarkXPress 8 and a free plug-in for InDesign CS4 that prints a frame around the edge of a page or spread. (Versions are also available for QuarkXPress 7 and 6, and InDesign CS3.) PageFrame is handy when you want to temporarily print a border around the edge of a business card, invitation or other small piece. You can control the border’s color, shade, line style and thickness.
Quick Reference for InDesign
InDesign CS4 introduced cross references, but that feature can be cumbersome at times. The free Quick Reference script from In-Tools helps to alleviate some of the headaches of working with cross references. The script adds a menu item for creating a Quick Reference. Using the menu items is as easy as selecting your source text, choosing Quick Reference from the Type menu, and selecting the destination text in the resulting dialog box. If you’re working with an InDesign Book document, not to worry: The Quick Reference script can search across all documents in the book to make cross references fairly pain-free.
Scribbler in InDesign
If you’re looking for a quick way to add some variety to your InDesign text, check out the free script named Scribbler from Loïc Aigon. Scribbler pushes your text above or below the baseline in a random pattern to give your text a “bouncing” effect. The dialog box is in French, which may or may not be an issue, but it quickly becomes obvious which settings to change to achieve the desired result. While you certainly wouldn’t want to use this script on large blocks of text, it can add a little something different when used sparingly.
