Helpful Utilities

Combine PDFs From Folder v1.0
This standalone AppleScript from Chris Paveglio will combine all PDFs in a chosen folder into one file. It can even combine pages that are of different sizes. Just double-click this script, then select a folder that contains PDFs. The script will then create a new PDF and place it into that folder.

DragThing 5.9.5
James Thomson’s DragThing ($29 shareware) is the most useful desktop organizer we’ve seen — we’ve been using it for years. Updated for Snow Leopard, DragThing lets you drag any application, folder or document into a slot on one of its floating docks, and then treat the item just like the original: double-click to open or launch, and drag-and-drop documents onto applications. You can even assign keyboard shortcuts that open or launch items. We use it to keep our many applications, databases, and standard documents handy for use. We use separate dock tabs (layers) for Applications, Documents, Utilities, Clippings, etc — each layer is a different color. DragThing can appear as a vertical list, or horizontally, with each item in a box, with or without icons or file names. Its main dock can appear as a Drawer off the edge of your display, with just a tab showing that causes the entire dock to appear when you mouse over it. It has many other features, such as if you Control-click a folder, its content appears in a hierarchical list. DragThing’s flawless performance and extreme flexibility, as well as plenty of delightful surprises, remind us of why we use Macintosh.

Mondrianum
Mondrianum, by Lithoglyph (free), is a standalone application that brings together the online Kuler community with many of your Mac applications. The Kuler community is a place for creating and sharing color themes and combinations. Any Mac app that supports the Apple’s built-in Color Picker will work with Mondrianum, giving you additional color choice and inspiration. Search Kuler’s themes by keyword, view by popularity, and drag and drop themes to the Color Picker for re-use. Mondrianum has an interface inspired by Apple’s Cover Flow for an easy visual browsing experience.

OmniDiskSweeper 1.7.1
OmniDiskSweeper (free) is a time-tested utility for quickly finding and deleting big useless files to free up space on your hard drives. It presents you with a list of disks attached to your machine. When you select one, a new window opens with list of every folder and file, sorted by size. If you aren't sure what's in a file, you can open it by double-clicking on its icon or dragging its icon onto another application.

ShowColorPicker
This free script lets you summon the Color Picker with the flick of a keyboard shortcut, and is free for both Mac and Windows.
